These are some of the many records that I heard in 2009 that I think people might be interested in checking out, if you haven't already.
Iggy Pop-Preliminaires
Thankfully Iggy forgoes any attempts at a rock revival given the rather miserable outcome of the Stooges' 2008 release, The Weirdness, and his last solo album, Skull Ring. Preliminaires finds him finds him experimenting with everything from Dixieland style horns on King of the Dogs-possibly one of his best solo tunes ever-to Bowie-esque expermimentation with dancey beats on Party Time. The album remains varied and creepy throughout. This is possibly one of my favorite Iggy solo releases since 1979's highly underrated New Values. A truly weird record from one of rock n' roll's true misfit souls.
Hardcore Superstar-Beg For It
For fans of Guns N' Roses, early Motley Crue, etc. This Swedish band pens sleazy, dark, infectious and insanely catchy, heavy glam metal. Don't let the glam influence fool you, these guys hit hard and aggressive. It's too bad that American audiences don't seem to care about them.
Duff McKagan's Loaded-Sick LP and Wasted Heart EP-Brilliant, soulful rock n' roll from this former Guns N' Roses member. Thankfully, it sounds nothing at all like Velvet Revolver.
William Elliot Whitmore-Animals in the Dark
Skeletonwitch-Breathing The Fire
Wino-Puncuated Equilibrium
Shrinebuilder-Shrinebuilder (Members of St. Vitus, Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins)
